“You shall have no other gods before me.
"No other gods before me" sounds, at first read, like a jealous demand. But look at where it lands in the story: right after a nation of slaves has just been walked out of Egypt by a power that fought for them when they had nothing to offer in return. The command comes after the rescue, not before it.
That order matters. It's not a bill to be paid — it's more like someone who just pulled you out of a burning building asking you not to keep running back in for things that don't matter. Everyone has something functioning as a god: money, approval, control, being right. This verse doesn't pretend you have none. It just asks which one is actually sitting on the throne of your attention.
You don't have to have that sorted out today. But it's worth an honest look: what would you protect, chase, or organize your whole life around, even if nobody ever found out? That answer tends to reveal more than we'd like it to.
