His Face Toward You

The Priestly Blessing

The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
NUMBERS 6:24-26 · ESV

This blessing was written to be said out loud, over real people, by name. "The LORD bless you and keep you... make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you... lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace." No conditions attached. No list of requirements met first.

Notice what it doesn't say. It doesn't say bless you once you've cleaned up, or keep you once you've earned it. It's a face turned toward someone, shining, not scowling — offered before any performance review.

If the word blessing feels like church furniture to you, something recited but not really believed, try hearing it differently: this is someone insisting that being truly seen doesn't have to be a terrifying prospect. Peace, not a scorecard. You're allowed to wonder whether a blessing like that could actually be meant for you.

What would change if you actually believed that face was turned toward you and not against you?

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
