Balaam was hired to curse a people he'd never met, and instead this comes out of his mouth: I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel. He's describing something he can't fully see yet, from a vantage point he doesn't control.
That's an odd position to be in — glimpsing something real without being able to explain all of it, or say exactly when it arrives. Balaam wasn't even trying to say this. The words came from somewhere outside his own plans and intentions.
Maybe that's closer to where you are than you'd expect. You don't need the whole picture in focus to sense that something is there, pointing forward, worth paying attention to — even if all you can say right now is: I see it, but not clearly yet.
