Discovering Jesus Together
DAILY VERSE · Day 54

Every Word

Bread and Word

And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
DEUTERONOMY 8:3 · ESV

Man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. Notice what came before that line: hunger, real and deliberate, followed by manna — a food nobody had ever seen or asked for. The point wasn't the hunger itself. It was proving that survival didn't depend only on what people expected it to.

That's a hard lesson to learn without the hunger. Most of us build our sense of security around things we can see and control — income, plans, routines. This verse doesn't dismiss any of that. It just insists there's another layer underneath it, one that doesn't show up on a balance sheet.

Jesus later quotes this exact line back at the devil, in his own moment of hunger in the wilderness. Whatever you make of that, the pattern is consistent: something sustains people that isn't food, isn't money, isn't a five-year plan — and it's worth at least being curious about what that actually is.

What is it you've been quietly assuming keeps you alive, and have you ever considered there might be something underneath it?

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
