Israel wants a king, someone visible, someone other nations can respect. God's answer to Samuel isn't really anger at the people so much as sad clarity: they're not rejecting you, Samuel — they're rejecting me.
There's something almost familiar in that exchange. It's an old human move: trade a relationship that requires trust for an arrangement that feels easier to manage. A king you can see and measure. A God who apparently still has to keep proving Himself isn't enough for them.
