"May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us." It's an old blessing, and on the surface it isn't asking for much — just a little light. But look closer and it's actually a request for something rare: to be looked at with warmth instead of judgment.
Maybe you've spent a long time assuming that if God exists, His face would be turned away from you — disappointed, distant, or simply not paying attention. This verse pictures something else: a face turned toward people, shining, not because they earned it but because that's the kind of grace being described here.
You don't have to already believe this is true to notice how different it is from what you expected. A God whose first move is graciousness, not scorekeeping. Whatever you think you know about how this works, this line is worth sitting with for a minute before deciding it isn't for you.
