A New Song

A New Song

Oh sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth!
PSALM 96:1 · ESV

"Oh sing to the Lord a new song." Not the same old song, worn thin from repetition — a new one. That's an unusual request if you think about it. It assumes there's always something fresh to notice, something you haven't said yet, even about a subject as old as God.

The invitation goes further than a private moment too: "sing to the Lord, all the earth." This isn't pitched at a select few who already have the words memorized. It's addressed to everyone, everywhere, as if the news being celebrated is universal enough to include people who've never sung a note of it before.

Maybe you've assumed this whole thing is a closed conversation, already fully scripted, with nothing left for you to bring to it. This verse suggests otherwise — that there's room for a new song, and that you, specifically, are among the "all the earth" being invited to add your voice.

If you assumed this conversation was already finished without you, what would it mean to bring your own honest voice to it instead?

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
