Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD!
"Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord!" No preamble, no polished opening — just a cry from somewhere low, sent upward without knowing for certain it'll be heard. This is one of the most honest opening lines in the whole Psalter precisely because it doesn't pretend things are fine.
What's notable is where the cry is aimed. Not inward, not at trying to fix the depths through sheer effort, but outward — toward God, specifically, as if that's still worth trying even from the bottom of whatever this is. The verse doesn't explain what the depths are. It doesn't have to. Everyone reading it eventually recognizes their own.
If you're in something low right now — grief, failure, shame, exhaustion, whatever your particular depths are — this verse doesn't ask you to climb out first before you're allowed to speak. It just models the cry itself, sent from exactly where you are.
