Fear not, O Jacob my servant, declares the LORD, for I am with you. I will make a full end of all the nations to which I have driven you, but of you I will not make a full end. I will discipline you in just measure, and I will by no means leave you unpunished.”
This verse holds two things together that don't usually sit comfortably side by side: real discipline and real refusal to let go. God says plainly he'll discipline his people in just measure — this isn't a promise that nothing bad will happen or that consequences get waived. And in the same breath: I will not make a full end of you.
That's a different kind of love than either extreme we're used to — not permissive love that pretends nothing matters, and not punishing love that ends the relationship over failure. It's a love willing to let consequences land while still refusing to walk away.
If you've experienced love that was one or the other — all consequence with no staying power, or all comfort with no honesty — this verse describes something rarer: fear not, because I am with you, and also, I will by no means leave you unpunished. Both true at once.
