The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.
This verse is correcting an old, comfortable excuse: the idea that you're stuck paying for your parents' failures, or that your children will pay for yours. It was a common assumption at the time — sins passed down the family line like debt. God interrupts that logic here and says something more direct: the soul who sins is the one who dies. Responsibility doesn't skip generations.
That can sound harsh at first, but look closer at what it's actually removing. It takes away the excuse of blaming your situation entirely on your parents, and it takes away the fear of being permanently doomed by someone else's failure. You are not simply the sum of what was done to you or before you.
That's not the whole story of grace, but it's an important piece of honesty: you are accountable for what's actually yours, no more and no less. If you've been carrying either false guilt for someone else's wrong, or false comfort in blaming your situation entirely on others, this verse pushes back on both.
