Discovering Jesus Together
DAILY VERSE · Day 274

Mercy, Not Sacrifice

Mercy, Not Ritual

For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.
HOSEA 6:6 · ESV

Jesus quotes this exact line twice in the Gospels, both times to correct people who thought they had religion figured out. That's a good clue for how seriously to take it.

Hosea isn't saying sacrifice was wrong or unwanted — it was part of the system God himself had set up. The problem was people performing it while the actual relationship it was supposed to represent had gone cold. Ritual without knowing God had become a substitute for knowing God, and God says plainly which one he actually wants.

That's worth sitting with if religion has ever looked to you like a checklist — attend, perform, comply. This verse suggests God isn't impressed by the checklist at all. What he's after is something closer to being known and knowing him back, and he'd rather have that messily than have flawless ritual with nothing real behind it.

If faith has always felt like a checklist to you, this verse is an invitation to ask what actually being known might look like instead.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
