Discovering Jesus Together
DAILY VERSE · Day 296

It Will Not Fall

On This Rock

And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
MATTHEW 16:18 · ESV

Peter, right before this verse, has just answered a question Jesus put directly to his disciples: who do you say I am? Peter's answer — that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God — earns this striking response: on this rock I will build my church, and nothing will overcome it.

What's easy to miss is who Peter was. Not a religious professional, not someone with a spotless record — impulsive, about to deny even knowing Jesus within days of this conversation. And Jesus builds on him anyway. The foundation isn't Peter's reliability; it's the confession he just made, out loud, about who Jesus actually is.

If you've assumed church, faith, or belonging in general requires having your life together first, this moment argues otherwise. The starting point wasn't Peter's character. It was a simple, honest answer to a direct question — the same question that's still being asked of anyone willing to answer it.

Who do you say Jesus is — and what would it take to give that question an honest answer?

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
