I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
A shepherd's job description in that world included the option to run when danger showed up — sheep weren't worth dying for, and hired hands knew it. Jesus draws the line differently: the good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. Not manages the risk. Not minimizes losses. Lays it down.
That's a strange thing to claim about yourself unless you actually mean to follow through on it, and this is one of several places where Jesus says exactly what he intends to do before he does it. The metaphor isn't decoration. It's a description of a plan.
If every authority figure you've known has protected their own position first and you second, this image runs the opposite direction. It describes someone who already decided your safety mattered more than his own — not abstractly, but as an actual, specific cost he was willing to pay.
If authority has always meant someone protecting themselves first, it's worth considering someone who claimed the opposite and then did it.
