In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
Every story has to start somewhere. This one starts before anything existed at all — no sky, no ground, no light. Just God, and then, suddenly, everything.
It's easy to skim past a line like this because it's so familiar. But sit with what it's actually claiming: that the universe isn't an accident someone has to explain away, and it isn't self-sufficient either. Something — someone — was there first, and chose to make a world.
If that's true, it changes a basic question you might not have thought to ask: not just how did we get here, but was there any intention behind it. You don't have to have that fully sorted out today. But it's worth noticing that the very first sentence of this book doesn't try to prove God exists — it just starts with the assumption that everything traces back to a beginning, and a beginner.
If you've never let yourself seriously ask whether there's intention behind it all, this might be a good day to start.
