For I am the LORD your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. You shall not defile yourselves with any swarming thing that crawls on the ground.
"Be holy, for I am holy" reads, at first, like an impossible standard handed down from somewhere unreachable — be perfect, essentially, because I am. That's a discouraging way to start a relationship with anyone, let alone God.
But look at what surrounds this line: dietary rules, purity codes, instructions about which animals to avoid touching. Strange, specific, ancient regulations. The point of all of it wasn't behavioral perfection for its own sake. It was distinction — a visible difference between this particular people and everyone around them, a reminder woven into daily life, meal by meal, that they belonged to someone.
Holiness here isn't primarily about moral flawlessness. It's about belonging, set apart on purpose, marked as someone's own. If the word "holy" has always sounded like an accusation aimed at how far short you fall, it's worth reconsidering what it might actually mean to be claimed by someone, distinctly, rather than blending into the background of everyone else's life.
