"We are like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again." It's a blunt image, offered by a wise woman trying to talk David into bringing his exiled son home. Death is final, she says — but then she says something almost surprising: God devises means so that the banished one will not remain an outcast.
That's the turn worth noticing. She names the hard fact first, without flinching, and then names a countermeasure. Not that death isn't real. But that being cut off doesn't have to be permanent — someone can work to bring the exiled back in.
If you've ever felt banished from something — a family, a community, your own sense of belonging — this verse doesn't pretend that feeling away. It just insists that exile isn't the final word. Something, or someone, can still find a way to bring you back.
