Heaven Cannot Contain

Heaven Cannot Contain

"But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you; how much less this house that I have built!
1 KINGS 8:27 · ESV

Solomon has just finished the most magnificent building his nation has ever constructed, and instead of basking in the achievement, he asks a startling question: will God really dwell on earth? Heaven, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you — how much less this house I've built?

There's real humility in that question, coming from the man who built the thing. He's not pretending the temple captures or contains God. He's naming, out loud, the gap between anything humans can construct and the reality of who God actually is.

If you've ever felt like your best efforts at reaching God — whatever those look like for you — fall short of something you can't quite name, Solomon isn't offering a fix. He's just being honest that even his greatest project was never going to be enough to hold the whole truth. Maybe that honesty is itself a kind of worship.

If nothing you build or achieve could ever fully contain who God is, what would it mean to stop trying to and just show up honest instead?

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
