And he said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD."
Job has just lost his children, his wealth, and everything that made his life recognizable, all in a single day. This is not a verse about someone processing a minor setback. It's the rawest kind of grief there is. And what comes out of his mouth isn't denial, and it isn't rage either — it's something stranger: naked I came, naked I'll return, the LORD gave and the LORD has taken away, blessed be His name.
That's not the same as saying it doesn't hurt. It's a recognition that everything he had, he never actually owned in the first place — it was given, and now it's gone, and neither fact cancels the other out. He can grieve the loss and still hold on to something bigger than the loss. That's a strange kind of freedom, one that most of us only reach for once we've already lost the thing.
You don't need to be at peace with your own losses to notice what Job is doing here. He's not performing acceptance. He's telling the truth about what was always temporary, even the parts that felt permanent.
