If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my service I would wait, till my renewal should come.
This might be the oldest version of a question almost everyone eventually asks in private: if this ends, does anything of me continue? Job doesn't ask it abstractly, from a comfortable armchair. He asks it while he's actively suffering, actively facing the possibility of his own death, which makes the question sharper than a philosophy seminar ever could.
What's notable is what he does with the uncertainty. He doesn't pretend to know the answer, but he doesn't collapse into despair either. He says he'd wait — all the days of his hard service, however long that turns out to be — for whatever renewal might come. That's a strange, stubborn kind of hope: waiting for something you can't prove, simply because the alternative is giving up on the possibility entirely.
You don't have to have this resolved to recognize the question as your own. Most people carry some version of it quietly. Job just said it out loud, refusing to pretend the uncertainty wasn't there.
