There is no arbiter between us, who might lay his hand on us both.
Job wants a fair hearing. He's convinced he's been wronged, but he's also talking about God, who is not exactly an equal opposing party in a courtroom. So he names precisely what's missing: someone who could stand between the two of them, a hand on each, who could actually mediate the dispute instead of one side simply overpowering the other.
That's not a complaint about God's existence. It's a complaint about access — about the impossible position of having a grievance against someone so far beyond you that there's no neutral ground to stand on, no third party to call in. Job isn't losing his faith here. He's identifying the exact shape of the problem faith runs into once suffering gets personal.
What makes this verse land differently than it did for Job's original audience is the question it leaves hanging in the air, unanswered in his lifetime: what if that mediator actually showed up eventually? Job asks for something he assumes doesn't exist. Whether or not you believe it does is a question worth sitting with rather than skipping past.
