The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them.
Wolves don't naturally dwell with lambs. That's not poetic exaggeration, it's the entire point — Isaiah is describing something that doesn't currently exist anywhere in nature or in human history, a world where the predator-prey logic that governs everything simply stops applying. And then he hands the picture over to a child to lead it.
It would be easy to read this as pure fantasy, wishful thinking about a world that will never actually arrive. But notice how specific it is. Not vague peace — actual natural enemies, actual physical safety, described in enough detail that you can picture it. This isn't an abstraction about inner calm. It's a claim about the way things are eventually supposed to work.
If you've written off the idea of real peace as naive, this verse doesn't ask you to pretend the world isn't full of wolves right now. It asks whether you can imagine, even skeptically, that the current arrangement isn't permanent.
If you're skeptical that real peace is even possible, it's worth asking who this child is supposed to be before dismissing the picture.
