Discovering Jesus Together
DAILY VERSE · Day 254

New Every Morning

New Mercies

The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
LAMENTATIONS 3:22-23 · ESV

It's easy to miss how much devastation surrounds this sentence. The book it comes from is a raw, unfiltered lament over a city destroyed — starvation, grief, the kind of loss that doesn't get neatly resolved by the end of the chapter. And then, right in the middle of it, this: his mercies never come to an end, they are new every morning.

That's not a denial of the grief around it. It's spoken from inside the grief, not after it's over. The writer isn't claiming things are actually fine. He's claiming something steadier is running underneath the wreckage — a faithfulness that renews daily, regardless of how bad yesterday was.

If you woke up today already tired of your own situation, this verse isn't asking you to feel differently about it. It's making a specific claim: that whatever this day requires, there's something new available for it, not just leftover strength from a source that's already run dry.

What would it mean to look for something new today instead of running on yesterday's leftover strength?

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
