"The valley of decision" is a name, not a metaphor Joel invented casually — a real, crowded place where a real reckoning happens. What makes the phrase stick is the repetition: multitudes, multitudes. Not one person quietly weighing their options. Everyone, all at once, facing something that can no longer be avoided or postponed.
It's tempting to treat questions about God as something you can leave open indefinitely, revisit later, get to eventually. This image pushes against that. It pictures a moment where the postponing runs out and a decision, one way or another, becomes unavoidable — not because anyone's rushing you, but because some questions don't stay neutral forever.
You don't have to accept every detail of Joel's apocalyptic imagery to take the underlying point seriously: indecision itself is not a permanently safe place to stand.
