Then he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts.
This line was spoken to a man named Zerubbabel, who had the job of rebuilding a temple with a small, exhausted group of people and no real political power behind him. Every practical measure said the project should fail. Then comes this message: not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit.
It's worth noticing what's being ruled out. Not effort itself — Zerubbabel still had to show up and build. What's ruled out is the assumption that outcomes ultimately depend on having enough strength, resources, or leverage to force things through. The verse relocates the real source of the outcome somewhere else entirely.
That's a strange comfort if your life right now feels under-resourced for whatever you're facing — not enough energy, not enough certainty, not enough of whatever you assume success requires. This verse doesn't promise the obstacles will vanish. It suggests the thing that actually gets you through was never going to be your own supply of strength anyway.
If you've been trying to force an outcome through sheer willpower, this verse is worth considering as a different way through.
