“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Jesus opens his most famous teaching not by praising the strong or the impressive, but by naming the people usually left out of blessing lists: the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, the hungry, the persecuted. If you were designing a speech to win a crowd, this is not how you'd start.
What's striking is how many of these describe a lack, not an achievement. Mourning isn't a skill. Hunger for righteousness isn't a credential. Being persecuted isn't something you earn. Jesus is describing people in need, in weakness, in incompleteness — and calling them blessed anyway, not blessed once they've fixed it.
If you've always assumed you'd need to arrive somewhere — spiritually solid, morally sorted, emotionally strong — before you'd qualify for whatever Jesus is offering, this list says otherwise. It reads like an invitation aimed specifically at people who know they're not finished yet.
