For so the Lord has commanded us, saying, “‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’”
Paul and Barnabas hit resistance from the religious establishment and, instead of backing down, they widen the audience: since you reject this, we turn to the nations. And then they justify it with an old promise, quoted almost as evidence — I have made you a light for the Gentiles, salvation to the ends of the earth.
That's a striking pivot. The message wasn't shrinking under rejection, it was expanding past whatever boundary had been assumed around it. Not for one nation, one ethnicity, one insider group. To the ends of the earth — about as far a reach as language allows.
If you've ever assumed this was written for someone else's culture, someone else's history, someone else's people, this verse is the moment the story explicitly stops being contained that way. The light was never meant to stop at the original audience. It was aimed outward, all along, toward exactly the kind of person reading this now.
