For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
Paul doesn't try to make the cross sound reasonable. He calls it folly outright — admits that to a lot of people, the core message he's built his life on sounds like foolishness. That's an unusual move for someone trying to convince anyone of anything. Most arguments try to look smart. This one starts by conceding it looks dumb.
But then it splits the audience in two, based not on intelligence or education, but on where each group is standing. To those perishing, it's foolish. To those being saved, the very same message is the power of God. Same words, same story, opposite reactions — which suggests the deciding factor isn't the argument's quality. It's something happening in the listener.
If the story of a crucified man being the hinge of history strikes you as absurd, Paul isn't shocked, and he isn't going to argue you out of that reaction with better logic. He's making a different kind of claim: that this message does something to people who let it in, something an outside analysis can't fully capture.
