Discovering Jesus Together
DAILY VERSE · Day 363

This Calls For Wisdom

Wisdom To Discern

This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666.
REVELATION 13:18 · ESV

Almost everyone has heard of 666 — it shows up in horror movies and jokes about bad luck long before anyone reads the actual passage it comes from. That's a shame, because the verse itself isn't asking for a spooky reaction. It's asking for wisdom. "Let the one who has understanding calculate" — this is presented as a puzzle for people paying close attention, not a slogan for people who want a cheap scare.

There's something almost refreshing about that. In a book full of strange and overwhelming imagery, this verse pauses to say: think about this carefully, don't just react to it. It assumes its readers are capable of more than fear — that they can actually reason their way toward understanding something difficult.

Whatever you make of the number itself, the invitation underneath it holds up: approach the hard, strange parts of this book — and honestly, of faith in general — with your mind engaged, not just your nerves.

What would it look like to approach the parts of faith that unsettle you with curiosity instead of fear?

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
